| Don Carolis Hewavitarne |
|
|
The Company's Founder, Don Carolis Hewavitarne, devoted much of his time and resources to his religion.
He was one of the founder's of the Vidyodaya Pirivena College, an institution for teaching and
training Buddhist monks. He also set up the Hewavitarne Industrial School a non paying institution
for the less privileged where boys were trained in carpentry and girls in weaving. His wife,
Mallika, founded the Mallika Niwasa Samithiya one of the foremost non-profit Women's Buddhist
societies in Sri Lanka today. An elder's home for women built on the land donated by her is the oldest
of its kind in the Island. In more recent times an Infant Orphanage and a Home for Orphaned Boys of
school going age were also affiliated to this organisation. Through out their lifetime they continued to
help many less fortunate & destitute persons.

Don David the eldest son of the founder is better known as the Sri Lankan Buddhist leader Anagarika
Dharmapala. His goal in life was to resuscitate Buddhism & Sinhala culture in Ceylon at a time when
over 300 years of foreign domination had sapped their vitality. He saw the plight his people had fallen
into - their religion neglected, their lives dispirited and drifting into something alien and unnatural.
He traversed the country calling for Buddhist resurgence, unity & a national awareness.
He was a great orator & pioneered the growth & spread of Buddhist education.

The Maha Bodhi Society a South Asian Buddhist association was founded by him to protect Buddhist sites in India and to re-kindle the religion once again in the land where Buddhism began. The organization's self-stated initial efforts were for the purpose of resuscitation of Buddhism in India and of restoring the ancient Buddhist shrines at BodhGaya, Sarnath and Kushinara. His work in India was his greatest contribution to Buddhism, where after a great struggle he succeeded in getting the Government of India to recognise Buddhagaya as a Buddhist site and hand the site back to Buddhists after centuries of occupation by others. Today there are Maha Bodhi centers in many Indian Cities Sri S Lanka & in London as well.
The Anagarika Dharmapala Trust continues to send Buddhist monks overseas to propagate Buddhism and is involved in many Buddhist activities worldwide. The Trust manages the Foster Robinson Hospital which provides herbal/native medicine to patients free of charge. Presently the Chairman and Managing Director of the company are Trustees of the Anagarika Dharmapala Trust. |

| Environmental Issues |
All solid wood furniture manufactured by DON CAROLIS is made mainly out of Tropical Hardwoods such as Ceylon Teak & Mahogany. The company only purchases timbers harvested & sold by the State authorities and Plantations with permits issued by the Government Authorities.
Moratuwa is the furniture manufacturing capital of Sri Lanka. Wood waste such as wood shavings and saw dust was being dumped on the beach, in waterways and in illegal land fills surrounding this area, causing major environmental and health hazards. Our commitment towards environmental issues resulted in the establishment of a briquette manufacturing plant as an alternative energy source. Today these briquettes are used as an alternative fuel for kilns for seasoning timber, drying tea, etc.
In 2006, the company embarked on a Teak plantation project. We intend to plant over 100,000 trees in the next 5 years. |
